Love Your Earth
“What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another” Mahatma Ghandi.
Did you know that in the past 50 years, humans have consumed more resources than in all previous history (EPA 2009).
Most of the earths harm is anthropogenic. If we have caused so much demolition, don’t you think we can substantially slow down that destruction by learning how to protect our planet instead of continuing to harm it?
Most people see the environment only as an aesthetic contribution to our lives here on earth, and to a certain extent, that is fine. But on top of that, I also view the planet as a huge interwoven system from the plants, to invertebrates, to vertebrates, to humans.
We all serve functions in the world, just as the bees pollinate the flowers, we play a critical role with our time here on earth. We need to start setting aside some of our anthropocentric attitudes, and learn how to conserve more because we are not only hurting ourselves, but all the other living things that inhabit the same planet; Many of which in fact serve vital functions to our survival as a species.
We take so much from the planet, but we CANNOT forget to give back. It should not matter if you are the only one practicing sustainability among many who are not. I think it is time we get rid of the idea that our personal actions don’t create larger effects. Think Butterfly Effect. So many animals and species are going extinct, and that’s because of us… how selfish.
Remember the earth is able to survive without humans, but humans need the earth to thrive. That alone should speak volumes.
Happy Earth Day my fellow earthlings.
Peace and love [s.t.]
